New Delhi/Bhubaneswar, Aug 5: The centuries-old spiritual tradition of Odisha’s Puri Rath Yatra is set to receive national recognition as the sacred wheels of the festival’s three chariots will be installed at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.

The decision marks an important moment for Odisha’s cultural heritage, bringing symbols associated with Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra to a prominent national landmark. The proposal was presented by Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) Chief Administrator Arabinda Padhee during a meeting with President Droupadi Murmu, who approved the initiative.

The wheels from Nandighosh (Lord Jagannath’s chariot), Taladhwaja (Lord Balabhadra’s chariot), and Darpadalan (Goddess Subhadra’s chariot) will be transported from Puri and displayed within the Rashtrapati Bhavan premises as symbols of Odisha’s rich religious and artistic traditions.

The move comes as India continues to promote its diverse cultural heritage on national and global platforms. The Puri Rath Yatra, one of the country’s most significant spiritual events, attracts millions of devotees every year and represents centuries-old traditions of devotion, craftsmanship, and community participation.

The annual chariots used during the festival are built by traditional artisans following age-old practices. After the completion of the Yatra, the chariots are dismantled as part of the custom, with various components being preserved, reused, or offered to devotees.

The installation of the sacred wheels at Rashtrapati Bhavan will provide visitors with an opportunity to connect with Odisha’s Jagannath culture and understand the historical significance of one of India’s most celebrated festivals.

The initiative follows earlier efforts to showcase Odisha’s heritage at Rashtrapati Bhavan, including the installation of replicas of the iconic Konark wheels, further strengthening the representation of India’s regional art, architecture, and traditions at national institutions.

The move is expected to enhance cultural tourism, promote awareness of Odisha’s heritage, and celebrate the country’s diverse traditions on a wider platform.
