Bengaluru,Oct 16: Canada-based subsurface engineering firm VZFOX is entering the Indian market as part of the Canadian Trade Mission, as the country looks to strengthen domestic energy production and reduce its high dependence on imported crude. VZFOX was selected to join the Government of Canada’s Team Canada Trade Mission to India as part of the Canadian delegation focused on advancing clean technology and the energy transition in one of the world’s most important energy markets. The company will focus on mature-field revitalization, reservoir optimization, EOR/IOR, injection and field redevelopment, while also supporting emerging CO2 storage and Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage projects.
In India, mature and brownfield assets are the heart of hydrocarbon production. However, as fields mature, reservoir behaviour becomes more complex: pressure regimes change, fluid movement becomes harder to predict, sweep efficiency can deteriorate and additional capital becomes more difficult to justify. This is where VZFOX becomes relevant. VZFOX’s expertise in reservoir characterisation, production and pressure analysis, compartment identification, injection optimisation, infill and recompletion screening and EOR/IOR evaluation helps identify where additional recovery is possible and which interventions make the strongest technical and economic case.
Building a Two-Way Partnership
Currently, the brand is developing a focused technical team in India. They intend to establish their office in Bengaluru with a team of 5 members by the end of this year and organically expand the team as the business grows. The company's model is designed to create a two-way exchange of expertise: VZFOX brings Canadian technical expertise to Indian energy projects while developing Indian engineering talent that can support its international operations.
VZFOX brings over two decades of Canadian subsurface, reservoir and injection engineering experience to conventional oil and gas, EOR/IOR and emerging carbon-management applications and carries a strong client base across North America and other markets. VZFOX works alongside operator teams as a strategic and technical advisor, helping reduce subsurface uncertainty, challenge assumptions and connect reservoir understanding to field-development, capital and implementation decisions — whether the objective is to improve recovery from an existing field, evaluate an EOR/IOR opportunity, design an injection strategy or advance a CCUS/carbon-storage project.
Bringing Canadian Expertise to India's Energy Opportunity
Recent volatility in West Asia has reinforced the urgency around India’s energy security at a time when the country is already working to strengthen domestic exploration and production. Also, the country’s crude oil import dependence reached 88.7% in FY26, up from 85.5% in FY22, while domestic crude oil production declined from 29.7 MMT to 28.0 MMT over the same period. As energy requirements rise, the need for steady energy access and reduction of reliance on imports becomes imperative. The Team Canada Trade Mission also aims to assess the country's potential to meet India's future energy requirements. Against this backdrop, the Team Canada Trade Mission provides VZFOX with a timely platform to begin building relationships in India.
Canada itself is a major global oil and gas producer, ranking fourth in crude oil production and fifth in natural gas production. The Western Canada Sedimentary Basin is one of the world’s largest and best‑explored hydrocarbon basins. 92% of Canada’s oil production and all its marketable gas is produced in the WCSB. It underlies about 1.4 million km² and has seen more than 850,000 oil and gas wells drilled since 1901. That century‑plus of data and operating history has given Canadian operators and regulators deep, practical expertise in complex reservoirs, mature assets and evolving production technologies. For India, as it works to strengthen domestic production and energy security while advancing responsible energy development, this experience is directly relevant.
“Our conversations with Indian oil and gas companies show that India has strong engineering capability. One of the opportunities we see is helping operators get more value from existing energy assets. Canada has built deep expertise in complex and mature reservoirs, supported by a strong technical ecosystem and regulatory framework. India has scale, a large base of producing assets and a continuing need to strengthen domestic production, alongside growing investment in carbon management and lower-carbon development. We want to complement these efforts by bringing our expertise directly to Indian energy projects. We see India as a long-term technical market, not a one-off trade mission opportunity,” said Vick Saxon, Managing Partner and Director, VZFOX.
“We see the Team Canada Trade Mission as the right entry point into India. However, we don't want to rush into India, hire a large team and then figure out what the market looks like. We plan to build a core team of 5 people in India to support our operations and expand this team as our impact grows. Right now, our priority is building a small number of meaningful relationships with Indian operators, engineering organisations, EPCs and project developers where our subsurface expertise can add value. Our plan is to develop recurring technical work around these relationships rather than commit to an arbitrary revenue target at this stage. As that work develops, we expect the model to evolve into a stronger India presence and a larger local technical team,” said Vinay Kumar, Executive Director & Senior Advisor, VZFOX
