A new annual award by Anupa Mehta Contemporary Art (AMCA) will launch the career of Indian artists with a debut solo exhibition at the gallery.

Mumbai, September 16, 2025: Anupa Mehta Contemporary Art (AMCA) is paving the way for artists of exceptional talent to gain a head start in their careers with the announcement of its annual The Emerging Artist Solo Award (TEAS). The first recipient of the 2025 award is Meenakshi Nihalani.

Gallerist and curator Anupa Mehta says, "This award celebrates the work of a promising artist whose practice addresses subjects of socio-political and economic relevance with conceptual clarity. I’m delighted to confer the first award by AMCA to Meenakshi, who engaged us beyond her canvas with her deep knowledge of the subject, her technical finesse, and unique creativity."

Meenakshi’s award-winning project, inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's letters around the Champaran Satyagraha and its impact on Indian farmers, will be presented in her debut solo exhibition at AMCA, opening on October 9. The Mumbai-based artist is being recognized for her deeply researched and sensitively crafted project documenting the plight of indigo farmers and the devastating impact of colonialism on India’s agrarian sector.

By offering this annual opportunity to emerging artists, AMCA seeks not only to propel artistic careers but also to enable vital conversations through art at both local and global levels. Ahead of Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, Meenakshi Nihalani’s upcoming exhibition—opening on October 9—will blend immersive and tactile elements to create a powerful, reflective experience for audiences.

The event is supported by Sangita Jindal's Hampi Art Labs, where Meenakshi completed her residency.
